Dog Days

It's been crazy here lately. Crazy, I tell you.

But in a pretty good way, although I have fallen by the wayside in keeping up with my correspondence, and that's just bad. I owe a few apologies, and I'd better get busy.

Anyway, on Monday my bf and I were driving back from town and we were on a pretty busy, high speed road when we rounded a bend and the cars were stopped dead. So we stopped too, of course, and are craning our necks to see what's going on, and spot a dog in the road, a trembling, wilted, terrified dog wandering in and out of the lane.

I start yelling Pull over! Pull over! because if we can't move that dog, sooner or later somebody's going to hit it and that's just unacceptable. (Trust me. I have pulled over for paralyzed squirrels laying in the middle of the road before, unable to drag themselves off, and turtles, too. Ask my sister. She got one of her cats when her fiance saw it writhing in the center of the road, hit and unable to get up. Happy ending for the cat, as he much beloved these days.)

Anyway, we pulled over but before I could get out, the dog walked into the other lane, so we had to turn around and pull up behind it to block traffic, where to my horror, it was so bewildered and terrified that it just sat down in the middle of the lane, and gave up.

So I jump out and bolt into the lane -- giving my bf a heart attack -- and call the dog in my nicest voice. The dog whimpers and doesn't move, and the traffic is backing up behind me, so I just figured Oh well, if it rips my face off, there's a hospital nearby, and went over and picked it up. Now, it's about a sixty pound dog, wet, muddy, terrified, shivering and doesn't know me from Adam, and it lets me carry it into the passenger seat, where it promptly climbs up like a clumsy baby pony of a dog, and curls up in my lap.

So, it's a quick trip back to the store for a collar and leash -- she had nothing, no ID, no collar, nothing -- and food and treats, and then back home with her because there was no way I'd take her to the pound. She's the nicest, sweetest, snuggliest, most affectionate dog I've ever met, so we reached out to a bunch of people who live in the area to see if they've heard anything about a missing dog, and the answer is no, so far. We also put a couple of ads in the paper and are waiting to see what happens.

Meanwhile, she's merging very nicely into the house:

and one of my cats is totally smitten with her. As are we.

And in writing news, I've just added two new Ordinary Beauty book signing events to my appearance calendar, one on June 25th at the Barnes & Noble in Wilkes-Barre, PA and one on July 1 at the Brunswick Square Barnes & Noble in East Brunswick, NJ. I'm very excited about both of them, and I hope to see you guys there!
